As you all know I love pictures..... looking at pictures, taking pictures, being in pictures (which never happens, especially as a mom). Something I'm trying to master for my own family pictures is actually something my clients ask me about a whole bunch. That would be STYLING!
"What should we wear?"

Well this year while trying to gracefully commit to the full time photography business and attempting a major organizational overhaul, I've been creating and designing just about everything. One of my projects was to answer to that WTW question. I thought it would be easy, I'm just making a Pinterest board, right? Then I kind of realized I needed to not only appeal to the basic "What should we wear?" person, but also the "What should we wear? / Can you just tell me what color / style / shoes?"
So I won't Clinton Kelly you, but do those plaids match? No.
I love when people bring their style to a photo session. For me it's fun to see who people are, and I love my job because of that. When my husband and I had engagement photos done (God love our photographer) my husband had his wallet in his back pocket. We didn't notice until about halfway through but it was kind of an "oh geez" moment (and during portrait sessions I usually do have people throw phones, wallets, hair ties, all in my camera bag for safe keeping and so they are out of the way). But back to clothing and actual accessories, if you're a suit and tie, professional-style person then keep that signature look going for portraits, are you carefree and boho? Let me say first that I love your look, and lets go for it!
As a photographer, I don't want to completely change your look, I just want to capture it at it's best. I would say (unless you're planning something themed or specific) arrive to your photo session in your "Sunday Best", whatever that may be. I know a man who wears overalls everywhere (no, I'm not talking about my husband). This particular man wore overalls to a funeral. They were spotless and he had on a very nice shirt and boots with them..... I'm seriously telling you that this man had "Sunday Best" overalls.
One of my only suggestions (for couples and families / groups) is to NOT MATCH! Just complement. If you have a big group then a few of the same color is okay. As a photographer now, I have nightmares of family pictures from my childhood being color coded with cousins and siblings so that my grandparents (who are truly just precious by the way, y'all) could tell their friends who belonged to who.... I suppose it was kind of a genius idea but, just don't. Don't match.
Below I have (left) the wonderful styling of the early 2000's and (right) when I finally directed the apparel options for a moderately last minute family portrait. Yes unfortunately, my husband is the one popping off the screen in burnt orange. There's lots to be desired in both images but you get the memo... don't be the family on the left.🙂
I am super excited for some gorgeous family and maternity sessions starting this month through the end of 2018! I can't wait to see all cute outfits and meet my new #SJPfamilies. So in this blog post, I'm including an idea board.....yes, it's on Pinterest! There are some great ideas for what to wear for your pictures....and as always, you can message me your ideas for what you’re planning if you like.
